The Importance of Education - Forever Free

Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.

~ Frederick Douglass

As of September 1st, students in Rwanda are returning to their classrooms. We wanted to share with the you a bit of the joy that can be found in Susa Primary School, located next door to the Handspun Hope campus in Musanze.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL PHOTOGRAPHS WERE TAKEN PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC.

Many of the ladies working for Handspun Hope send their children to Susa Primary. Here, they receive their education … and education is a huge component when it comes to ending the poverty cycle and changing the life of a child. Why?

As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

At Susa Primary, students learn not only the basics of reading, writing and mathematics - they learn leadership and integrity…

Unfortunately, school is not free in Rwanda. In order to attend, parents must be able to pay for books and supplies, tuition and uniform fees. It costs approximately $80 to send one child to school for a year, which is a tremendous amount of money for one family. And if you have three … or five …. or eight children, there is simply no way to provide education to every child.

This often leads to impossible choices …

Which child will I educate?

Who goes without?

Why must I choose?

The ladies working for Handspun Hope receive assistance from the organization to provide education for every child in their care. And we regularly donate educational materials to Susa Primary School to ensure students, whether they are connected to Handspun Hope or not, have access to the tools needed for learning.

If you would like to make a donation that is earmarked for educating children, use the link below and type “educational fees” in the designation area. That’s it!

   GIVE NOW

To the staff and students at Susa Primary School:

We know this year will look different, as it will for us and everyone returning to school in a post-COVID world.

Our hearts are with you and we will be praying blessings over you.

Cheers to changing the world through education!
